The Babes-Bolyai University (BBU) research team is located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and headed by Assistant Prof. Flaviu Turcu, brings expertise that is fundamental for the project, i.e. the capacity to provide a detailed physico-chemical characterisation of the test materials. The Institute of Interdisciplinary Research in Bio-Nano-Sciences (ICI-BNS) and the National Magnetic Resonance Centre at BBU led by Prof. Simion Simon, a key team member, have a strong experience in the field of nanostructured biomaterials structural/morphological characterisation, including immersion studies in different biofluids, e.g. simulated body fluids enriched with proteins. The wide range of state-of-the-art equipment and expertise required for such investigations is available in both centres. For the present project, BBU will be involved in achieving a detailed characterisation of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), before and after different experimental stages in vitro and in vivo, and also in investigating biopersistence of CNT in lung tissues and their stability in artificial body fluids.
